I’m watching The Speaker on the BBC as I write this. The contenders have been asked to step up in Wembley Arena in front of the three judges and deliver an off-the-cuff speech of 1 minute in duration on the topic of “Why I should win this competition.” The contestants are required to address the judges in the empty arena (normal capacity 12,000) using a megaphone.
Tough challenge. Many dry mouths and loooooooong pauses.

My immediate thought is that I would step aside from myself and have a double-header – one character saying why this excellent fellow, Rowan, should win and the other character (Rowan) essentially demurring and saying, “Thank you very much.”

I’ve only seen one with any humour or positivity in her delivery thus far.

More to come on this.
