So you’re coming to the end of the selection process and it’s all gone very well. The company have sent you out a letter of offer and they’re going to put you through a medical and a reference check, but other than those minor hurdles – you’ve got the job.

Minor hurdle? Reference checking? In many cases, this is anything but minor. I’m always surprised when I encounter people who think about their references as a last-minute detail. Does the phrase, “… subject to satisfactory references …” sound familiar at all? It’s the get-out-of-jail-free phrase for employers, because if someone from your past casts any aspersions on your character or competence, it’s game over.

So manage those references. I had a little chinwag with the nice folks on Q102 about this the other day. It’s not rocket science, but it’s truly surprising how many people don’t stay on top of this vital cog in the job-hunting machine.
