I like the Ignite method – 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide for a total of 5 minutes onstage. This is such a great talk from VJ at Ignite Seattle earlier this year – funny, useful and thought-provoking.

Ask an audience when they realised that they were in for a good time at a presentation and most of them will tell you, “As soon as he walked onstage.” Ask most managers who have just made a hire when they knew they had the right person and you will hear some version along the theme of “As soon as he/she sat down.” Now, I recognise that this isn’t fair, or particularly rational, but you will still hear that response from most people most of the time.

Nota bene:

  • Human beings use thin slicing whether they want to or not.
  • Human beings select by mirroring whether they want to or not.
  • Human being are prone to cold reading and seduction techniques whether they want to be or not.
