A client from the healthcare sector gave me a case-in-point the other day that really resonated with me. A colleague of his had died of cancer some weeks back. Late 30s, with a family, spent her working years patient-facing in the hospital. Eleven years working in the organisation. Eleven.

And not one member of the hospital’s management team turned up at the funeral.

This organisation has a mission statement, and no doubt there’s a section in there about how much they value their people. The organisation has a Dignity & Respect in the Workplace policy, which has been presented to, and distributed to, every staff member. The organisation has spent fortunes on team-building exercises over the years.

But you know what? Actions speak a whole lot louder than words. And that funeral tells me everything I could possibly ever need to know about that organisation.
